The Great Altar Of Pergamon Büyük Sunak Kitap Açıklaması: Acımasız saldırılarıyla Anadolu halklarını on yıllar boyu korkuya, katliamlara, yoksulluklara mahkûm eden Galat ordularına karşı Pergamon ordularının kazandığı zafer bu anıtla taçlandırıldı. Kral II. Eumenes’in (MÖ 197-159) talimatı ile yapılan bu anıt tüm antik dünyaya Galat zaferini ve dahası Pergamon Krallığı’nın gücünü ilan eden bir simgeydi.Yapının sade olan podyum bölümünün üstünde geniş bir friz yer alıyordu. İç avluya çıkan basamaklara bakan yüzler de dâhil olmak üzere anıtın tüm cephesini saran Büyük Friz, Hellenistik dünyanın görkemli sanat çalışmaları arasında anılan bir grup kabartma ile süslüydü. Bu kabartmalarda, Ege mitolojisinin en sevilen öykülerinden biri olan Olymposlu Tanrıların dev soylu Gigantları yenmesi betimleniyordu. Kuşkusuz ki Büyük Sunak’ı süsleyen bu harikulade yontularda Tanrılar Pergamonluları, Gigantlar ise onlara boyun eğen Galatları simgeliyordu. Kabartmalarda anlatılan öykünün başkahramanı Tanrı Zeus’tu. Çünkü o, Gigantlara diz çöktüren Olymposlu Tanrılar’ın lideriydi. İşte tam da bu nedenle Pergamon Büyük Sunağı tarih boyunca birçok kaynakta “Zeus Sunağı” olarak anılagelmiştir.Kabartmalı frizler, sunağın ana gövdesini taşıyordu. Bu gövde, tüm kenarları boyunca tek sıra olarak dizilmiş İon sütunları ile bir stoa şeklindeydi. Stoaların içinde ise ana gövdenin taşıyıcı duvarları yer alıyordu. Bu duvarların iç yüzeylerinde de alttaki frizi aratmayacak kalitede mermer kabartmalar vardı. Bu kabartmalarda (Küçük Friz) ise Pergamon şehrinin Efsanevi kurucusu olarak kabul edilen Telephos’un yaşam öyküsü anlatılıyordu. Bilimsel araştırmalar, sunağın üst yapısındaki bazı detaylar ile Telephos frizlerinin bir bölümünün bitirilemediğini ortaya koymuştur.The victory of the Pergamene army against that of the Galatians, who condemned the Anatolian peoples to fear, massacres and misery for decades with their ruthless attacks, was crowned with this monument. Built by the order of King Eumenes II (197-159 BC), this monument was a symbol declaring the power of the Kingdom of Pergamon and its victory over the Galatians to the entire ancient world.There was a large frieze above the plain podium. The Great Frieze surrounding the monument’s entire façade including the sides facing the stairs leading to the inner courtyard, was decorated with a group of reliefs, which are considered to be among the Hellenistic world’s most magnificent artworks. These reliefs depicted the victory of the Olympian gods over the Giants (also called Gigantes), one of the most popular stories of Aegean mythology. Undoubtedly, on these magnificent reliefs decorating the Great Altar, the Olympian gods symbolized the people of Pergamon, while the Giants symbolized the Galatians who submitted to them. Zeus, the sky and thunder god in ancient Greek mythology, was the protagonist of the story depicted on the reliefs as he was the leader of the Olympian gods who brought the Giants to their knees. This is exactly the reason why the Pergamon Altar was referred to as the “Altar of Zeus” in many sources throughout history.The sculptural friezes carried the main body of the altar, which was in the form of a stoa with Ionic columns aligned in a single row along all sides. The bearing walls of the main body were inside the stoas. On the interior façades of these walls, there were high quality marble reliefs that could compete with those of the frieze underneath. These reliefs (the Telephus Frieze) narrate the life story of Telephus, the legendary founder of the city of Pergamon. Scientific research revealed that some details on the superstructure of the altar and a part of the Telephus Frieze remained unfinished.(Tanıtım Bülteninden)
