On the eve of his departure from the asylum in Saint-Rémy in May 1890, Vincent van Gogh painted a remarkable group of four still lifes conceived as a unified series. In this work, subtle traces of pink along the tabletop and petals, now faded, recall the painting’s original harmony of pink roses set against a yellow green ground.
