Winston was surrendered to the shelter after previous owners believed he had a urinary blockage they were unable to treat. However, vets quickly discovered the real cause of his pain: months of malnutrition had left his bones brittle, leading to repeated infections and constant pain.

X-rays revealed Winston had multiple old pelvic fractures and a new spinal fracture, all caused by vitamin deficiency. These injuries were so excruciating they left Winston unable to use the restroom on his own.
