Struck in the final year of George III’s reign (1760–1820), this gold Half-Sovereign features a laureate portrait of the king facing right, engraved by Benedetto Pistrucci, with the date below.
The obverse bears the Latin inscription GEORGIVS III DEI GRATIA ("George III, by the Grace of God"). The reverse shows a crowned shield of arms with a dot below and the legend REX FID: DEF: BRITANNIARUM ("King of the Britains, Defender of the Faith").
It is a rare piece, notable for having the lowest mintage of its type—only 35,043 were struck.
