Obverse: Radiate-crowned, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian III facing to the right, legend surrounds, “IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG”.
Reverse: Mars stands facing to the left in military dress, holding inverted spear in left hand and resting right on shield which rests below, legend surrounds, “PM TR P II COS PP”.
A slightly ragged flan, otherwise well struck.
Gordian III was a Roman Emperor who ruled from 238-244 AD. He became emperor at the age of 13 and was known for his military campaigns against the Persians and the Goths. He was also a patron of the arts and a supporter of the pagan religion, before his death at the age of 19.
