Struck between 1249 and 1286, the silver penny of Alexander III of Scotland is a remarkable survival of medieval coinage. Bearing a crowned portrait of the young king on the obverse and a long cross with pellets on the reverse, it symbolised royal authority and expanding trade. These coins circulated widely across Scotland and beyond.
