Details: This dreamy sterling silver necklace bridged continents and united the maker and wearer with an appreciation of the natural world. A lovely example of Aesthetic Movement (approx. 1870's-1880's) wreathes its wearer with delicate images of nature. Each hollow-form silver panel or button depicts tiny scenes of flowering trees and cranes, garlands, flowers and vines. 

The Aesthetic Movement in the West intersected with the Meiji (1870's-1918) period in Japan. Skilled Japanese metal artists were freed from fabricating armor and armaments for the Samurai class of earlier periods. They turned to figurative art, sometimes intended for export to the hungry west.

The necklace showcases alternating repoussé images. Repoussé is French, meaning to push forward, and refers to the meticulous process of hammering metal from the reverse side to create a raised design. 

Measurements: Total length is 16", each crane panel measures 1'' x .4", the round floral pieces are .6". Weight 28.4 grams

Origin: Meiji Japan circa 1880's

Condition: This little piece of history was well loved and has the mark of time on it. We feel the wear enhances its very singular nature.
