Mirtazapine

Mirtazapine is a tricyclic anti-depressant used in pets to treat a wide range of conditions, including behavioral problems, loss of appetite and management of weight in dogs and cats. Mirtazapine is mostly used where poor appetite and nausea are present as in gastrointestinal disease, liver or kidney disease, or others. It is also given to alleviate the nausea and appetite loss that accompanies cancer treatment by chemotherapy.

Mirtazapine exerts anti-nausea effects by acting on the neuroreceptors in the intestine and stomach, which in turn communicate with the vomit center in the brain.

Medical conditions that might benefit from Mirtazapine:

• Anorexia in dogs and cats, including cats with chronic renal disease
• Management of weight loss in cats
• Nausea, vomiting in dogs and cats, including chemotherapy-induced nausea
• Chronic pain

Dosage and Administration:
In dogs, mirtazapine is generally give in tablet form once daily. The tablet form can also be used in cats but is given every 2 or 3 days.

Side Effects:
The most common side effect of this medication is drowsiness, though hyperactivity was reported in 11% of cats using the transdermal gel. In cats, increased affectionate behavior is reported as well as increased vocalization.
