Matisse painted The Blue Window in 1913 at his studio at Issy-les-Moulineaux — a view from inside looking out, the room and the garden merging into a flat field of blue that anticipates abstraction by several decades. The objects on the windowsill are rendered as pure shape, the garden outside as pure colour. One of his most quietly radical paintings, and one of the most beautiful in this collection.
