Stamped on the reverse of the brass stand "Venini, Murano, Made in Italy"

Scapra studied in Venice at the Academy of Fine Arts and teached in 1926 at the Higher Institute of Architecture. In 1927 he started working for the firm of MVM Cappellini & Co. and in 1932 he took over from Napoleone Martinuzzi  at Venini & Co, where he remained until 1947.

During this 15-year period, he served as the artistic director for the glassware firm, where he experimented with and pioneered numerous glassblowing techniques and styles.

The "Filigrana" technique originated on Murano in the 16th Century and was used for delicate and intricate glass pieces from functional glass objects to decorative art pieces. Carlo Scarpa revived the process at Venini & Co in the 1930's producing numerous pieces of exquisite quality and design which he presented at the Venice Bienanale in 1934.  Scarpa was also a glass and furniture designer of great note.
