The Battle of Salamis (480 BCE) was a decisive naval conflict during the Greco-Persian Wars, where the Greek city-states, led by Themistocles, defeated the much larger Persian fleet under King Xerxes. Taking place in the narrow straits of Salamis, the Greeks’ smaller, more manoeuvrable ships capitalised on their knowledge of local waters to outflank and overwhelm the Persian fleet. This victory was pivotal, halting Persian expansion into Europe and safeguarding Greek independence and culture.
