John Hancock Signed Appointment, Massachusetts, 1781. PSA JSA

Exceptional Revolutionary War-era appointment document signed by John Hancock (1737–1793) as Governor and Commander in Chief of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, dated March 1781. This official Commonwealth commission appoints Oliver Prescott, Esquire as a Justice of the Peace for Middlesex County, granting him authority to uphold the laws and maintain order within the Commonwealth during one of the most pivotal periods in early American history.

Printed on a large folio sheet bearing the Commonwealth heading and embossed seal, the document is completed in manuscript and features a bold, highly desirable John Hancock signature at lower right. Hancock’s signature remains one of the most recognizable and sought-after autographs from the American Revolution, and examples signed during his tenure as Governor are particularly prized by collectors and institutions.

The document is remarkably well-preserved, with clean, bright paper that retains an attractive white appearance, displaying strong contrast between the printed text and manuscript entries.
