The Korean War began in June 1950, when North Korean forces launched an invasion of South Korea. The Australians were part of a force that was defending the Kapyong Valley, north of Seoul, during April 1951. The coin’s reverse depicts an Australian soldier wearing Korean War kit. The background incorporates a printed historical image of soldiers at Kapyong, and the inscription KAPYONG 1951. The Perth Mint's ‘P’ mintmark is also incorporated into the design.
