SUGAR CANE
This distinctly American-sounding brand, named after “sugarcane,” was Japan’s first postwar apparel manufacturer for the U.S. market. Founded in 1965 to produce garments for the U.S. military, it initially catered to personnel on military bases. After the Vietnam War, the brand shifted to the domestic market, maintaining authentic American-style workwear, especially denim, with uncompromising quality.

Denim That Evokes Okinawa
This pair features the brand’s original “Sugarcane Denim,” woven from a 50/50 blend of cotton and sugarcane fibers. Amino acids derived from the sugarcane provide natural antibacterial, deodorizing, and antistatic properties, keeping the wear clean and comfortable. The use of sugarcane byproducts also adds an eco-friendly touch, appealing to adults with a discerning eye for quality.
The 14oz fabric is dyed with a blend of Okinawan Ryukyu indigo and regular indigo, producing a deep, slightly reddish indigo with characteristic neps for a rich, textured look.
Finished with a one-wash process, the denim is soft from the start and develops its own unique fading over time. With each wash, the neps settle and the color harmonizes, letting the wearer cultivate a truly personal pair of jeans.
Subtle, Understated Japanese Details
The front features a button fly, a traditional design allowing easy opening even while wearing thick gloves, as miners once did.
The coin pocket edge uses selvedge and is reinforced with punched copper rivets.
The right back pocket is adorned with green thread embroidery in a traditional shippo (seven treasures) pattern, a motif historically used in Japan to symbolize prosperity and harmony.
The back pocket lining, reinforced with hidden rivets, features a print of traditional Japanese motifs, while the front pocket bags are made with durable sashiko weave—highlighting the brand’s meticulous attention to detail, even in areas that remain unseen.
The patch is made from python leather, traditionally used in Okinawan instruments like the sanshin, and features a lacquered logo for a bold, striking effect. The design is rich with Japanese-inspired details throughout.
*The logo is finished using urushi, a traditional Japanese lacquer, rather than standard printing. Because urushi is a delicate material, some peeling or flaking may occur due to friction during wear, and slight peeling may also be visible when you receive the item.
This is a natural characteristic of urushi and is not considered a defect. Thank you for your understanding of the unique nature of this material.

As selvedge denim, folding up the hems is recommended to showcase the selvedge.
