If all of God’s creation is good, and the Bible says it is, why is so much of it just so… gross? It’s easy to find God in the beautiful parts of creation, but even the gross things can teach us about God. Mud, barf, boogers, and scabs can remind us how God takes away our “gross” sin so we can do good to others. In Gross But Good 4-Week Children's Ministry Curriculum, kids will learn that God can turn gross things into good things.
_______
“He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.” Psalm 40:2
Mud
Scripture: Luke 19:1-10 Zacchaeus
Mud reminds us that God’s creation is messy. It became messy when sin entered the world. When we walk through mud, we leave muddy tracks everywhere we go. As Christians, we need to let God clean off the mud of sin off of us so that instead of spreading mud, we can spread God’s love to others. Then we can experience the same transformation that Zacchaeus did when he met Jesus and went from cheating people to blessing people. Objective: Kids will learn, “I need Jesus to change my heart from bad to good”.
Barf
Scripture: Matthew 5:21-26, Go be reconciled
Seriously, God made barf. It’s true! As gross as it is, it serves an important purpose: it gets yucky, unhealthy things out of our bodies. God doesn’t want us to fill ourselves with bitterness, anger, and grudges. He wants us to “vomit” these things out and make peace with people who have wronged us.
Objective: Kids will learn, “With Jesus I can forgive and let go of my grudges”.
Boogers
Scripture: Ephesians 6:10-20, The Armor of God
What would happen if we didn’t have boogers? We’d get sick a lot more often. Boogers are part of our body’s defense system, standing guard to keep yucky germs and other invaders away. God wants us to guard our hearts and minds from sinful things and fill ourselves only with goodness.
Objective: Kids will learn, “studying God’s word can help me focus my mind on good things and not bad”.
Scabs
Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:17-21 New Creation
Scabs are gross. Scabs are the result of injuries, often from the crazy things we do, and there’s nothing we can do on our own to make them go away. You can’t pick at them. You have to let them heal. Sin is like a scab because nothing we do can take it away. Fortunately, Jesus came and died for us so that he could remove our “scabs” once and for all.
Objective: Kids will learn, “Jesus took the punishment I deserved so that I could be made new”.
