Tamotsu Yato’s final and most elusive work, OTOKO, remains a rare gem in the world of photography. Published in 1972 and dedicated to Yukio Mishima, this homoerotic photo book captured the raw beauty of Japanese masculinity with a melancholic, almost mythical gaze.

After his death at the age of 48, his relatives came forward and forbade publishing his work or reprinting his photo books.

The original prints and negatives used in the OTOKO book have yet to be found.
