Bottesini was known for basing many of his works on themes from operas, and his Fantasia ‘I Puritani’ is no different, taking its thematic material from Bellini’s opera of the same name. Bottesini in fact wrote two pieces based on this opera, one being the Duo Concertante for Cello, Double Bass and String Orchestra, and the other being the present version for double bass and orchestra (or piano). This new edition by Takanari Koyama is a direct representation of the source material in Bottesini’s own hand, with the addition of a version of the piano part for orchestral tuning and a version of the double bass part with suggested fingerings.
