Struck at the Rome Mint in AD 180, this silver Denarius commemorates the deified Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Measuring 18mm and weighing 2.43 grams, the obverse bears the legend DIVVS M ANTONINVS PIVS with a bare head portrait right.
The reverse, inscribed CONSECRATIO, depicts an eagle standing left on a thunderbolt, head turned right, holding a spear in its beak – symbolising the emperor’s apotheosis. Referenced in Sear 5976, RIC 271 and RSC 82a.
