The stone Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed in rapidly cooled lava flows. It sometimes contains patterns of gas bubbles from lava flows, evident in the layers of the molten rock that was moving before the resulting rock cooled very quickly. The sheen seen in this variety of obsidian is one of the fascinating chatoyant-like effects of the gas bubbles.  Obsidian is more a rock (extrusive igneous rock) than a mineral, because it's composition is very variable...it could be considered a "mineraloid."
