MOONSTAR
A footwear brand based in Kurume, Japan. One of the country’s most established shoe makers, long known for producing school shoes. Today, MOONSTAR has gained renewed attention through its vulcanized sneakers, now carried by discerning select shops.

Construction and Materials Make the Difference
This pair is made using the vulcanizing process, known for delivering long-lasting comfort. By applying heat to raw rubber mixed with sulfur, a chemical reaction transforms it into rubber with enhanced elasticity and strength.
The resulting sole is supple and flexible, while forming a strong bond with the upper for exceptional durability. Because bonding and molding are performed simultaneously, the shoe is highly resistant to losing its shape.
This process requires extensive equipment and skilled labor, making it less efficient and increasingly rare. That MOONSTAR continues to carry out this technique at its Kurume factory—while paying close attention to fabric dyeing, finishing, and rubber materials—speaks to the brand’s dedication. The result is a shoe that truly embodies the essence of craftsmanship.

Clean, refined closed-lacing design
One defining feature of the Gym Classic is its closed-lacing construction. In this design, the eyelet panels are tucked beneath the vamp, creating a streamlined structure.
While most sneakers feature a Derby (open-lacing) construction, this closed-lacing style allows the laces to be pulled snugly, minimizing tongue exposure and resulting in a cleaner, more composed appearance.
Durability and character that grow with time
The upper is made from high-quality, highly durable textile. Because the vulcanizing process involves heat and pressure, materials are carefully selected to withstand it. In addition, the fabric is finished with a coating known as PARAVUL COAT, enhancing strength, water resistance, and adhesion to the rubber sole.
With continued wear, the coated fabric develops subtle wear marks—often referred to as “chalky marks,” giving each pair a distinctive vintage character over time.
Design and practicality, perfectly balanced
The layered rubber toe reinforces durability while contributing to the shoe’s classic look. Carefully applied stitching across the upper further enhances its retro appeal.
*Note: A white powdery residue (rubber bloom) may occasionally appear on the surface. This occurs due to anti-aging agents used in rubber production and does not affect the shoe’s quality. It can be removed with a soft cloth using water-based rubber wax or shoe polish containing silicone resin.*
Ventilation eyelets on the inner side help reduce moisture buildup while adding a subtle design accent. The insole offers a balanced level of softness, providing comfortable support for everyday walking.
