Details: This charming and beautifully rendered greyhound was most likely created to commemorate a beloved companion for its owner. Crafted from rock crystal, this reverse intaglio was carved with the dogs' regal profile from the back, then intricately painted with perfect detail in oil paints. It's set in a gold-backed frame so that when viewed from the front, one sees a three-dimensional portrait floating in the crystal cabochon. There is a lovely double row of milligrain around the portrait and the backside is clean, perfect for engraved message or name and date.
During the Victorian through Edwardian time periods, c. 1880's - 1920's, Essex crystals were very popular, often showing scenes from nature and country life and frequently featuring a beloved pet. It was a sentimental way to keep the animal close to the owner's heart. The craftmanship of Essex crystals is extremely meticulous, very much a lost art and considered to be quite collectable.
