A beautifully hand-colored antique engraving depicting “William Penn’s Treaty with the Indians, when he founded the Province of Pennsylvania in North America, 1681,” after the celebrated original painting by Benjamin West.

This historic scene represents William Penn’s peaceful treaty with the Lenape (Delaware) Native Americans and became one of the most iconic images of early American history and Enlightenment ideals of tolerance and diplomacy.

Engraved by John Hall from West’s original painting and published in London from the renowned Boydell plate, this example is a 19th-century impression printed from the original copperplate and later hand-colored. The image retains excellent detail, strong color, and fine linework, and is presented in an elegant period-style frame.
