A beautifully modelled pair of antique Staffordshire dogs in the classic Comforter Spaniel form, dating to around c.1850. This well-known and much-loved design is documented in The A–Z of Staffordshire Dogs by Clive Mason Pope, where it is recorded as being produced in several sizes, from 1 to 6.

One of the dogs carries an impressed size “3” mark to the back, confirming that this pair belongs to that recognised series. The balanced proportions, flowing modelling of the coat, and the gentle seated pose are characteristic of mid-19th century Staffordshire figures and give the pair a calm, reassuring presence.

The dogs are finished with classic black hand-painted markings, one of the most popular and widely used colour-ways for Staffordshire dogs of this period, alongside red-painted examples. The hand-painted faces and patterns remain remarkably clear, with expressive eyes and carefully applied details that give each dog its own individuality. Together, they make a particularly appealing and decorative pair for a mantel, shelf, or sideboard.

Condition

Both dogs are in very good antique condition, which is particularly rare for a Victorian-era pair dating to around c.1850. It is unusual to find Staffordshire dogs of this age as a matching pair, and even more so without cracks or any signs of restoration.

One dog has a small chip to the back/bottom edge, visible in the photographs. Considering these figures are nearly 175 years old, this does not detract from their overall presence, and they display beautifully.
