Informal information:
A lovely old piece from Sugiura, possibly an early one. The clay has a lot of character which is attractive on it's own, but also affects the glaze with various speckles.
The glaze is a kiln changing one where copper is red in a reduction atmosphere, and green when oxidising. In this example, it has acheived the red colour where the glaze is thicker and converted copper has been trapped in it's reduced form. Probably about 60 years old, not a common artist.
Condition: Used, very good, aged, slight wobble.
Sugiura Keisen, born 1935, he made bonsai with his father and they made pots for their own trees as part of their hobby, and his early works are signed "Sanshu Mukoyama". After encountering the work of the famous Sanshu Ichiyo he started his own kiln in 1960 and signed works with this seal, "Keisen" and learnt from Ichiyo. You can find unglazed and glazed works, and if lucky, mame painted works.
