This painting depicts the bodhisattva pure realm known as Shambhala, the perfect manifestation of peace and harmony. The land is divided into eight outer regions. In the center is Mt. Kailasha and on top of that, the extraordinary city of Kalapa—home to the Bodhisattva Kings of the Tenth Bhumi.

Thangkas are traditional scroll paintings that are used as supports for meditation. They usually depict various representations of deities, mandalas, and enlightened beings. Since the outer representation of deities is often one of the first things we encounter, it is extremely important for these representations to be painted accurately in order to create the best karmic propensities for the teachings to flourish in the mind of the student. Khentrul Rinpoche has taken great care working closely with master Thangka painters and relying on the source texts to ensure the authenticity of each form.
