This is a distinct example of the geometric "Shield" Shirvan group (often associated with Lesghi Star designs). It features three bold, ivory-ground medallions arranged vertically on a field of deep charcoal-brown. The contrast is sharp and powerful—typical of the best turn-of-the-century Caucasian weavings.
Design & Details
The Field: The dark foundation allows the ivory shields to pop, creating a sense of depth not found in common red-field rugs.
The Borders: Framed by a classic "running dog" (diagonal stripe) minor border and a rust-red primary border filled with tribal rosettes.
The Wool: 100% hand-spun wool on wool foundation. The pile is low and dense, with that smooth, cool handle that only genuine antiques possess.
Condition & Dimensions
Size: 3'5" x 6'3" (Fits perfectly in a 4x6 space, wide hallway, or gallery kitchen).
Age: Circa 1900.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition. The rug lies flat and square with age-appropriate wear that highlights the weave structure.
Why we sourced it: Finding a 3-medallion Shirvan with this level of symmetry and such a clean, dark field is rare. It is a true collector's piece that is durable enough for daily use.
