The 1877 U.S. Silver Trade Dollar, minted for Asian commerce, was the only U.S. coin ever demonetized. In 1876, Congress revoked its legal tender status to push circulation of the Morgan dollar, which had slightly less silver. Despite this, many Trade Dollars remained in use domestically.
Nearly a century later, the Coinage Act of 1965 restored their status, making all U.S. coins legal tender once again. Today, they are prized by collectors worldwide.
