The Sakawa, a distinguished member of the Agano-class ships, was constructed at the Sasebo Naval Arsenal in November 1942 and completed in the twilight of World War II, in November 1944. Designed as a torpedo squadron flagship, the Sakawa boasted a modern design and armament, setting it apart from the earlier 5,500-ton class cruisers. Its primary armament included three 15cm twin guns and two innovative long 8cm twin high-angle guns. Despite being completed shortly after the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the Sakawa saw limited action as the Combined Fleet struggled to mount organized operations. Post-war, the Sakawa was repurposed as a demobilization ship before meeting her end as an atomic bomb test ship at Bikini Atoll in July 1946.
