Yunzi go stones, with polished bamboo bowls. Go, called Weiqi in Chinese, is perhaps the oldest board game in the world. It was thought to be one of the four arts, along with music, painting, and poetry, and became part of the training of the ancient warriors of Japan and China. Today the game is played worldwide. It is a game rich in strategy.

The Go stones of this set are Yunzi playing stones, which are the official standard of the Chinese Wei Qi Academy, and are used in major, national and international tournaments. Yunzi stones are made from a special combination of natural materials, one of which is a type of agate or gemstone. However the exact materials and the procedure used in making the stones have long been kept secret. Yunzi's long history can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty ( 618 to 907 AD).

When Yunzi Stones are held against the light, they will appear dark green or soft white respectively, and show a beautiful translucency. These stones are the more traditional, single-convex type (flat on one side).

Selector's Notes

Go is a two-player game which has simple rules that can be learned very quickly but, as with chess and similar board games, complex strategies may be deployed by experienced players.
