Some say that originally the Golden snitch was not a ball, but a little bird called the Golden Snidget, introduced in 1269. It was customary to release frightened Snidget’s during the game, with 150 points going to whichever team caught the terrified animal first. Sadly, the birds were small, and were easily crushed in the Seekers hand. The practice eventually stopped when the Snidget species became endangered, and thereafter the brilliant wizard Bowman Wright invented the Golden Snitch to mimic the bird’s tactical movements in order to replace it. Guess it all worked out, can you imagine how weird it would’ve been if Harry swallowed a bird instead?
