Description:
Josef LaBois (Rabolu) was an Austrian composer and pianist who, despite the handicap of going blind at the age of three, made a great career as a music teacher. He was the first teacher of Schoenberg and Alma Mahler, and was a friend of many early 20th century musicians. Among the most important events in Larboa's life was his mentorship of the pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right hand in the war, and almost all of his works were published through the efforts of the Wittgenstein family. As a composer, he remained a lifelong lover of clear classical forms and wrote many beautifully balanced works. The Piano Quartet and Piano Quintet recorded here are also works with subdued colors reminiscent of Brahms. Without using the heavy sound of the late Romanticism, they create a solitary world.
